Blackrock Castle Observatory
Built in the 16thC, Blackrock Castle is the oldest surviving structure still in use in the city of Cork. For this reason alone, we highly recommend a visit! This historic castle has served as an Admiralty Court, a lighthouse, a signalling station and a gun battery, defending the river approach to Cork.
Set in a stunning location overlooking Cork Harbour, the building was lovingly restored and became the CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory. Visitors can now enjoy interactive exhibits, explore space and alien lifeforms, or discover the battlements and castle’s rich maritime history during their visit.
The planetarium and tower top are among the best loved parts of any tour. After your trip to Blackrock castle Observatory, you can walk the length of the Marina, a famous public waterside walkway in cork on the banks of the Lee, or take a trip to Mahon Point Shopping centre, which is just a short 10 minute walk from the castle.
